Hidden Columbus: ZipZone Canopy Tours and Camp Mary Orton

Hidden Columbus: ZipZone Canopy Tours and Camp Mary Orton

Zip lining was originally a method of transportation and cargo delivery in areas with rugged, mountainous terrain. Today it’s a popular activity that challenges both the body and the mind as you take in the world from a new vantage point. At ZipZone, we have 20 acres of lush, utterly gorgeous Ohio Valley forest for you to explore within Central Ohio’s Camp Mary Orton. Our staff is experienced, and committed to the safety and enjoyment of all our guests, promoting a deeply-held philosophy of environmental conservation and non-invasive exploration that fits perfectly with the philosophy of Camp Mary Orton.

Camp Mary Orton History

If you’ve ever been to ZipZone, you probably know that we’re located within Camp Mary Orton. Founded by teacher and Columbus resident Anna Keagle, it was designed as a haven for children to find stimulation, education and recreation. The camp got its start in 1898 when the First Neighborhood Guild was established, establishing the neighborhood’s first library, educational classes, social and community clubs and even a kindergarten.

Just two years later, Henry Godman, who owned the Godman Show Company, made a generous donation that allowed the Guild to expand into a larger facility. Then in 1910, benefactress  Annetta Johnson St. Gaudens donated 11 acres of land to create a place for the city’s youths “to love the trees and wildflowers and beasts of the soil.” Camp Johnson, as it was known then, was able to grow thanks to continued support from the Godman Guild. Edward Orton, Jr., an active board member with the Guild, later contributed proceeds from his wife’s estate. The lodge at the camp was built in her honor, and the camp eventually took on her name to become Camp Mary Orton.

Today, Camp Mary Orton has grown to cover 167 acres and offers summer camp activities, community recreation, corporate meeting spaces, and event and wedding facilities.  A portion of the proceeds from ZipZone booking fees go toward supporting the great programs they create and provide to our community.
